Fish don&#8217;t have that option, they have to swim around in their own toilet.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Their poop then starts to break down in the water and releases ammonia, which is highly toxic to fish. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Ammonia will burn their skin and gills, which can lead to fin rot, and eventually death.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>On top of that, any food they missed during feeding, dead tankmates, or any dead plant matter trapped in the tank will start to rot and release ammonia.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The nitrogen cycle is nature&#8217;s way of dealing with it all. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"has-text-align-center has-background\" style=\"background-color:#7cdfd4\"><strong>However, in a new aquarium, there aren&#8217;t enough beneficial bacteria to get rid of these toxins quickly enough. <\/strong><br><strong>It takes time to establish bacteria and stabilize the cycle.<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"stages-of-the-aquarium-nitrogen-cycle\">Stages Of The Aquarium Nitrogen Cycle<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>These are 3 stages of the aquarium nitrogen cycle.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"htoc-1-ammonia-nh\">1 &#8211; It does an amazing job at removing ammonia and nitrate from your tank water.
