It&#8217;s actually a symptom of underlying issues that are causing your fish&#8217;s gills and kidneys not to function correctly.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Fish are constantly taking on water through a process called osmosis. It&#8217;s the kidneys and gills\u2019 job to get rid of excess water. When they&#8217;re not working correctly the fish retains excess water and starts to bloat.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Dropsy is the swelling of the soft tissue within the fish&#8217;s body, due to water retention. It causes a huge swelling of their belly and if left long enough their entire body. However, the underlying issue that has caused dropsy may be contagious.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>You need to find out what has caused your fish to get dropsy in the first place, and then address the underlying issue to stop the rest of your fish from possibly getting it.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"can-a-fish-recover-from-dropsy\">Can A Fish Recover From Dropsy?<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>If you spot the signs of dropsy <em>early enough<\/em> and take <em>immediate<\/em> action, it&#8217;s possible that a fish can recover from dropsy.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>It&#8217;s not a quick recovery process and will require time and patience from you. You also need to be prepared for the worst as there is no guarantee any treatment will be successful.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>If your fish has the late stages of dropsy, the prognosis generally isn&#8217;t good. Usually, euthanasia is the kindest thing to do.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Treatment of dropsy is generally geared towards correcting the underlying cause and preventing it from happening to your other fish.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"dropsy-in-fish-symptoms\">Dropsy In Fish Symptoms<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>There are many symptoms of dropsy in fish. If you spend time watching your fish and get to know what&#8217;s normal behavior for them, you should then be able to notice when something doesn&#8217;t appear right with them.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>There are some early warning signs that your fish could have dropsy including:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul>\n<li>Appearing lethargic<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Clamped fins<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Curved spine &#8211; caused by internal organs being pushed aside<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Hiding<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Loss of appetite<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Loss of coloration<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Pale gills &#8211; a sign of anemia<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Passing pale and stringy poop<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Redness of the skin and fins<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Swelling of the anus<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Swimming near the water\u2019s surface<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Ulcers along the body and lateral line<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p>The more advanced symptoms of dropsy are:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul>\n<li>Swollen belly<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Protruding scales that resemble a pinecone<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><a href=\"https:\/\/aquaristgeek.com\/how-to-cure-popeye-in-betta-fish\/\" data-type=\"post\" data-id=\"4125\" data-lasso-id=\"3697\">Bulging eyes<\/a> &#8211; known as popeye, this is a related condition caused by the <em>Aeromonas<\/em> bacteria found in an aquarium<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p>A <a href=\"https:\/\/aquaristgeek.com\/swim-bladder-disease\/\" data-type=\"post\" data-id=\"1302\" data-lasso-id=\"3698\">fish with a swollen belly<\/a> can also be a sign of swim bladder disease.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"what-causes-dropsy-in-fish\">What Causes Dropsy In Fish<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>One of the biggest myths I see a lot is that the bacteria called <em>Aeromonas<\/em> causes dropsy, however, this isn&#8217;t true. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>This bacteria does attack your fish, but only when your fish&#8217;s immune system is already compromised, whether that be from another illness, poor diet, poor water quality, or stress.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Dropsy is a symptom of the gills and kidneys not functioning properly, so you need to find the cause of this, to know what has caused dropsy in your fish.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Stress factors in an aquarium include:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul>\n<li>Poor water quality<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Nitrogen cycle crash, causing an <a href=\"https:\/\/aquaristgeek.com\/aquarium-nitrogen-cycle\/\" data-type=\"post\" data-id=\"1640\" data-lasso-id=\"3699\">ammonia or nitrite spike<\/a><\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>High nitrate levels, mean you <a href=\"https:\/\/aquaristgeek.com\/how-to-clean-a-fish-tank\/\" data-type=\"post\" data-id=\"1562\" data-lasso-id=\"3700\">need to clean your aquarium<\/a>.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Poor diet<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Sudden changes in water temperature<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Injury from bumping into something<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Aggressive tankmates<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Stress from being transported from in.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>You can reduce the stress factors in a fish tank by:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul>\n<li>Testing the water regularly and making sure the parameters are stable and healthy<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Keeping the water at the correct temperature and avoiding sudden temperature changes<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Cleaning your fish tank regularly and performing water changes to keep the nitrate at safe levels.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Feeding your fish a high-quality varied diet.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Not overstocking your tank, as this can crash the nitrogen cycle and lead to aggression amongst tankmates<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Not overfeeding your fish, as leftover food will rot and release ammonia into the water<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Always quarantine new additions before adding them to your tank<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"how-to-treat-dropsy-in-fish\">How To Treat Dropsy In Fish<\/h2>\n\n\n<div class=\"wp-block-image\">\n<figure class=\"aligncenter either contact your local fish vet or follow a multi-step treatment plan.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>There are no guarantees that any dropsy fish treatment will be successful, but following these steps will give your fish the best possible chance of recovery if you\u2019ve caught it early enough.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Please bear in mind I am not a qualified vet, so it\u2019s always advisable to contact a qualified Isolate the affected fish in a quarantine\/hospital tank.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>2.
