Dirty Tank Water<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p>Turtles are messy critters and their tanks can soon resemble a swamp and get pretty smelly if you don&#8217;t have good quality filtration.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Aquarium filters are generally rated for keeping fish. A pet turtle needs much better filtration than fish because they create much more waste.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>You need a filter that can handle at least 2-3 times the volume of water in your tank. Inadequate Or No Basking Area<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p>You need to provide turtles with a suitably sized basking area equipped with heat and UV lighting.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Turtles bask in sunlight naturally in the wild to dry off their shells and absorb UV light.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Pet turtles are generally kept indoors so you need to provide:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ol>\n<li>A <a href=\"https:\/\/aquaristgeek.com\/best-turtle-basking-platform\/\" data-type=\"post\" data-id=\"2358\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\" data-lasso-id=\"1009\">basking platform<\/a> that stays dry.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>A<a href=\"https:\/\/aquaristgeek.com\/best-turtle-heat-lamp\/\" data-type=\"post\" data-id=\"3570\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\" data-lasso-id=\"1010\"> heat lamp<\/a> to dry off their shell properly.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>A <a href=\"https:\/\/aquaristgeek.com\/best-uvb-light-for-turtles\/\" data-type=\"post\" data-id=\"2489\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\" data-lasso-id=\"1011\">UVA\/UVB lamp<\/a> so they can absorb enough UV light.<\/li>\n<\/ol>\n\n\n\n<p>A basking platform should be kept dry at all times and not be submerged in the water or get wet from spray bars.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>UVA light is needed to help your turtle\u2019s immune system, mood, metabolism, breeding health, and general activity levels throughout the day.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>UVB light helps them produce vitamin D3 which metabolizes the calcium in their diet to keep their bones and shells healthy.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>A heat lamp warms your turtle up and allows them to dry out, helping prevent fungal infections.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"htoc-3-damage-to-turtles-shell\">3. Damage To Turtles Shell<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p>This could be caused by other turtles in the tank.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>You may need to look at upgrading to a larger tank or separating the turtles completely.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Damage to a turtle&#8217;s shell can also be caused by sharp objects in the tank.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Do you have any large pointy rocks that your turtle may be bashing into? If so, it\u2019s best to remove them to avoid any further damage.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"htoc-4-ticks\">4. Ticks<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p>This tends to be more of an issue for tortoises rather than turtles.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>But, if you take your turtle outside to bask and roam around the garden, always check for ticks once you bring them back inside.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"htoc-how-to-treat-shell-rot-at-home\">How To Treat Shell Rot At Home<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>If you&#8217;ve caught the shell rot early enough you should be able to treat it at home.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The first thing to do is to figure out and fix what&#8217;s causing the shell rot:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul>\n<li>Dirty tank water?<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>No basking area?<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Damage to shell from tankmate?<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Sharp objects in the tank?<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Tick?<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p>Once you&#8217;ve fixed the underlying cause you can move on to the treatment stage.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Treatment works best if you can limit the amount of time your turtle is in its tank.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Put them in their tank for 1-2 hours per day to eat and go to the bathroom.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Make sure you provide them with a shallow dish of water for drinking when they are out of their tank.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"htoc-turtle-shell-rot-treatment\">Turtle Shell Rot Treatment<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p>You&#8217;ll need the following items to treat your turtle:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul>\n<li><a items, you should follow the steps below:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>Step 1:<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Remove the turtle from the water, so it can be kept dry whilst you are treating it.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>Step 2:<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Debride (remove) any dead areas of the shell by gently scraping them with a scalpel.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>If it doesn&#8217;t come away easily, leave it as you may harm your turtle.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Ask a vet to do this if you don&#8217;t feel confident or skip to the next step.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>Step 3:<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Gently clean all of your turtle&#8217;s shell with warm water and a toothbrush, to remove any dirt or algae.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Rinse your turtle well with clean water.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>Step 4:<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Thoroughly dry your turtle with a towel or allow it to air dry.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>Step 5:<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Carefully apply the betadine or<a href=\"https:\/\/www.amazon.com\/Major-Povidone-Iodine-10\/dp\/B0165W97UA\/ref=sr_1_5?crid=3MF6YZQM68OLW&amp;keywords=povidone-iodine&amp;qid=1654607972&amp;sprefix=povidone-iodine%2Caps%2C156&amp;sr=8-5\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"sponsored noopener\" data-lasso-id=\"1022\"> <\/a>povidone-iodine solution to the infected and surrounding areas.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Keep the turtle in a clean tub away from water to allow the treatment to fully dry and be absorbed.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"has-text-align-center has-background\" style=\"background-color:#7cdfd4\"><strong><span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\">Top Tip<\/span>: Be careful not to spill these products when using them, as they stain everything!!<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>Step 6:<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Apply<a rel=\"sponsored noopener\" data-lasso-id=\"1023\"> <\/a>silver sulfadiazine cream to affected areas (optional)<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>Step 7:<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Allow your turtle to bask under a UV and heat lamp or put it out in the sunshine for 30 mins per day.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>If your turtle isn&#8217;t warm enough, its body won&#8217;t heal.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>Step 8:<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Repeat this process once or twice a day, it can take a few weeks to fully heal.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"htoc-when-to-see-a-vet\">When To See A contact a vet ASAP as it could have progressed into severe turtle shell rot and will need stronger medication.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>If not treated quickly shell rot can turn to<a href=\"https:\/\/www.addl.purdue.edu\/newsletters\/2000\/fall\/scudc.shtml\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\" data-lasso-id=\"1024\"> SCUD<\/a> which is a much more serious condition and can prove fatal.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"has-text-align-center has-background\" style=\"background-color:#7cdfd4\"><strong>If you follow the home treatment steps above and don&#8217;t see any improvement within by:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul>\n<li>Having a good quality water filter<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Regularly <a href=\"https:\/\/aquaristgeek.com\/how-to-clean-a-turtle-tank\/\" target=\"_blank\" data-type=\"post\" data-id=\"3822\" rel=\"noopener\" data-lasso-id=\"1025\">clean your turtle tank<\/a> and change the water<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Provide a basking area with both heat <strong>and<\/strong> UV lights<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Removing sharp objects from your turtle tank<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p>If you&#8217;ve more than 1 turtle in your tank it could be that the tank is too small and they&#8217;re bumping into each other, or they could be fighting over territory.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>If that&#8217;s the case, upgrading to a bigger tank may resolve the issue, or you may have to keep your turtles in as the turtle grows.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>When shedding, the scutes should come off whole and are so thin they&#8217;re almost see-through. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Please don&#8217;t &#8216;help&#8217; your turtle shed by pulling off any peeling scutes, as this can be painful for them.
