affected.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>This article will discuss the symptoms, treatment, and prevention of popeye in betta fish.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"htoc-n\">Normal Betta Eyes vs Popeye<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>Your betta&#8217;s eyes should be evenly sized, clear, and not protruding too much (left image), in the image on the right you can clearly see the betta fish eye is swollen and has a cloudy appearance. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>If your betta has one or two swollen eyes, you must treat it for popeye immediately, I&#8217;ve recommended some treatment plans below.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure most obvious sign that your betta fish has popeye, one or both eyes can be affected.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>If you notice that your betta&#8217;s eyes are bulging, you should treat it for popeye as soon as possible.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"htoc-white-ring-around-eyes\">White Ring Around Eyes<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p>If you notice a white ring or splotches around your betta fish\u2019s eye or eyes, this can be an early warning sign before your betta gets full-blown popeye.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>You should treat your betta for popeye straight away.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"htoc-eyes-change-color\">Eyes Change Color<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p>Your fish&#8217;s eye may appear cloudy or milky if the cornea has been damaged.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Physical trauma or injury may cause your fish&#8217;s eye to appear bloodshot.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"htoc-other-symptoms-that-your-betta-fish-is-unwell-are\">Other Symptoms That Your Betta Fish Is Unwell condition.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ol>\n<li>Unilateral popeye (one bulging eye)<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Bilateral popeye (two bulging eyes)<\/li>\n<\/ol>\n\n\n\n<p>Both of these have different causes and you have to know which one your betta has in order to provide the correct treatment.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>To keep things simple, I&#8217;ll go over each of the above in separate sections, starting with unilateral popeye.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"htoc-causes-of-unilateral-popeye-one-bulging-eye\">1. It is advisable to keep them alone.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>You should watch out for aggressive tank mates if you keep betta fish in a community tank.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Fin nipping or aggressive behavior towards your betta can result in fights and injury.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Angelfish, barbs, and some tetras are known to be fin nippers.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"htoc-remove-plastic-plants\">Remove Plastic Plants<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image size-large\"><img decoding=\"async\" width=\"1024\" height=\"576\" src=\"https:\/\/aquaristgeek.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/07\/REMOVE-PLASTIC-PLANTS-1024x576.jpg\" alt=\"Remove plastic plants\" class=\"wp-image-4161\" srcset=\"https:\/\/aquaristgeek.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/07\/REMOVE-PLASTIC-PLANTS-1024x576.jpg 1024w, https:\/\/aquaristgeek.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/07\/REMOVE-PLASTIC-PLANTS-300x169.jpg 300w, https:\/\/aquaristgeek.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/07\/REMOVE-PLASTIC-PLANTS-768x432.jpg 768w, https:\/\/aquaristgeek.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/07\/REMOVE-PLASTIC-PLANTS.jpg 1280w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 1024px) 100vw, 1024px\" \/><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p>Plastic plants have sharp edges that can tear your betta&#8217;s fins or poke them in the eye, causing injury.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Real or silk plants are a much better alternative.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Betta fish like to hide amongst or rest on plants, some great live plant options for betta fish are:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul>\n<li>Anubias nana<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Duckweed<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Java fern<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Water sprite<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"htoc-remove-decor-items-with-sharp-edges\">Remove Decor Items With Sharp Edges<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p>Decor items like rocks, driftwood, or that really cool Star Wars ornament that you love, can have sharp edges on them that can damage your betta&#8217;s eyes should it bump into them.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Either file down the sharp edges or remove these items from the tank altogether.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"htoc-check-filter-flow-adjustable-filter\">Check Filter Flow Rate<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p>Betta fish have beautiful long flowing fins, but this means they are slow swimmers and not designed to swim in strong currents.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>If the water flow from your filter is too strong, a betta fish can end up getting bashed into objects in the tank, resulting in injury.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Reduce the flow of your filter if possible, or buy a filter with an adjustable flow rate.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"htoc-causes-of-bilateral-popeye-two-bulging-eyes\">2. Causes Of Bilateral Popeye (Two Bulging Eyes)<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>An underlying condition generally causes bilateral popeye, it can be tricky to figure out what&#8217;s causing the problem, so we&#8217;ll cover the most common causes.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>The first step should always be to check and test the tank water<\/strong>. It may seem clean, but the levels of toxicity may be high.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>If the water quality is good, there may be some other form of stress factor within your betta&#8217;s tank, such as bacterial, fungal, or parasitic infection.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>It could also be an issue with your betta&#8217;s kidneys or gills, causing water to build up in the tissue behind the eyes, so they start to bulge or protrude.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>If that&#8217;s the case, this is a serious problem and you should seek veterinary advice as soon as possible as your <a href=\"https:\/\/aquaristgeek.com\/dropsy-in-fish\/\" data-type=\"post\" data-id=\"1809\" data-lasso-id=\"5767\">fish may have dropsy<\/a>!<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"htoc-treatment-for-bilateral-popeye\">Treatment For Bilateral Popeye<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>If your betta is in a community tank, remove it straight away and place it in a quarantine\/hospital tank for treatment.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>As bilateral popeye could be caused by a bacterial infection, it&#8217;s best practice to treat the entire display tank too.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Perform a 75% water change on the tank you have just removed your betta fish from, and then perform 25% water changes each following day for a week.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>This will remove any infection in the water and help prevent your other fish from getting infected.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Monitor the community tank for any signs of popeye in your other fish.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"has-text-align-center has-global-color-9-background-color has-background\"><strong>Disclaimer: I&#8217;m not a qualified veterinarian, just a guy who loves keeping fish.<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>This is the method I have successfully used as a popeye betta treatment plan in the past.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Treat your betta fish with <a data-lasso-id=\"1151\" data-lasso-name=\"API AQUARIUM SALT Freshwater Aquarium Salt 67-Ounce Box (Packaging May Vary)\" href=\"https:\/\/www.amazon.com\/API-AQUARIUM-Freshwater-Aquarium-65-Ounce\/dp\/B0010P0ZJK?tag=aquaristgeek-20&#038;ref_=as_li_ss_tl\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow sponsored noopener\">aquarium salt<\/a> and medicine for bacterial infections.
