Some of it is accurate, and some of it is a little misleading.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>In this post, I\u2019ll advise you on which plants to avoid using in your betta tank, and which plants are safe to use.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>But, before we go any further:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"has-text-align-center has-global-color-9-background-color has-background\"><strong>Quick disclaimer, I\u2019m not a vet, just an avid fishkeeper. This is my opinion based on personal experience.<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>First up, the word toxic. We all instantly assume toxic means death. There are actually various degrees of toxicity, the symptoms of which range anywhere from mild irritation to death, and anywhere in between.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Certain plants, like peace lilies and pothos for example, contain toxic calcium oxalate crystals that can cause irritation and swelling in the mouth and throat of your fish if ingested.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>In large quantities, they can really open up a can of whoop ass on your betta\u2019s central nervous system.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>The trick to using these plants safely in a betta tank is:<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>Keep only the plant roots in the water<\/strong>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The plant&#8217;s leaves and stems should stay out of the water, otherwise, they will die and begin to break down, releasing poisonous calcium oxalate crystals into your water. Keep them dry and this won\u2019t happen.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>Keep your betta fish well fed s<\/strong><strong>o they don&#8217;t eat the plants<\/strong>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Betta fish need a protein-rich diet, which means they can&#8217;t survive on plant matter. If they get hungry enough, they may start nibbling on the plant&#8217;s roots in search of food.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>To prevent this, make sure to feed your betta fish regularly to keep them satisfied and prevent them from seeking nourishment from the plant roots.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"htoc-toxic-plants-for-betta-fish-aka-siamese-fighting-fish\">Toxic Plants For Betta Fish (aka Siamese Fighting Fish)<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>The following plants can be harmful to betta fish, so you should avoid these toxic plants to keep your betta safe and healthy.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"htoc-water-hemlock\">1. Hygrophila Balsamica<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image size-large is-style-default\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"1200\" height=\"675\" src=\"https:\/\/aquaristgeek.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/05\/Hygrophila-Balsamica-1200x675.jpg\" alt=\"Hygrophila Balsamica\" class=\"wp-image-6414\" srcset=\"https:\/\/aquaristgeek.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/05\/Hygrophila-Balsamica-1200x675.jpg 1200w, https:\/\/aquaristgeek.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/05\/Hygrophila-Balsamica-300x169.jpg 300w, https:\/\/aquaristgeek.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/05\/Hygrophila-Balsamica-768x432.jpg 768w, https:\/\/aquaristgeek.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/05\/Hygrophila-Balsamica.jpg 1280w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 1200px) 100vw, 1200px\" \/><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Hygrophila Balsamica can be grown in 2 ways, emersed or submerged.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>In its emersed form (aquatic plant reaching above the surface of the water), it releases a highly toxic sap into the water and should be avoided.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Hygrophila balsamica would be safe if it was grown submerged (underwater), but keep a close eye on its growth, so that it doesn&#8217;t grow above the surface of the water.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>I personally wouldn&#8217;t risk using this plant in an aquarium as there are much safer alternatives available. If you do decide to use this plant, it requires a good amount of light and high CO2 content.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"htoc-4-dieffenbachia-dumb-cane\">4. When you keep a betta in a small vase and add any type of plant, the plant blocks the water\u2019s surface so there\u2019s little to nowhere for your betta to take in this air.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>On top of that, there\u2019s no space for a heater in a vase, and a betta requires water to be 78\u00b0-82\u00b0 F \/ 25.5\u00b0-27.7\u00b0C. Cold water + a lack of air doesn\u2019t make for a happy and healthy betta.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"htoc-6-water-lettuce\">6. If properly maintained it\u2019s OK to use in a large aquarium.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>This plant does grow rather large and can take over your aquarium pretty quickly, so it&#8217;s not ideal for the smaller fish tanks that Bettas are usually kept in.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Because it is a floating plant, it can quickly cover the surface of the water, making it difficult for your betta fish to breathe in air at the surface.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"htoc-pothos\">7.
